They told you the job would be stressful, but not this stressful. As a telephone operator, it's up to you to get world leaders to talk out their differences - or face nuclear annihilation! The infamous Doomsday Clock is in attendance to warn you how close the world is to destruction - don't let it hit midnight!

What is the Doomsday Clock?

The Doomsday Clock was created and is managed by the nonprofit organization, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. It is meant to represent how close humanity is to disaster, be it from political tensions, war, climate change, etc. The closer the clock's minute hand is to midnight, the closer humanity is to global disaster, at least by the standards of the organization. Every few years, the organization moves the minute hand on the clock based on whether they believe humanity is closer or further from catastrophe. The Doomsday Clock has become a prescient symbol of the advances, and the crises, that we have been facing over the past half-century. The furthest from midnight the clock was ever set to was in 1991 at 17 minutes to midnight, while the closest it has been set to was in 2026 at 85 seconds to midnight.

How to Play

Objective

  • View disputes that two countries have on the TV screen
  • Connect the two countries on the telephone switchboard to let them call each other and resolve the dispute
  • Solve as many disputes as you can, as fast as you can - each one you leave unresolved causes the Doomsday Clock to count down
  • Some disputes are more serious than others! Manage your disputes wisely

Details

TV News

  • TV Monitor shows news stories with currently active disputes
  • Each headline contains the two countries currently in dispute in blue
  • Each headline has a timer at the bottom.
    • If it's red, the dispute is not currently being resolved and will lead to escalation (dropping a nuke)
    • If it's green, the dispute is currently being resolved
  • Leaving disputes unresolved will tick up Doomsday Clock

Each dispute has an icon on the right indicating its severity level. A dispute with a higher severity will take more time to resolve, but will also count down the Doomsday Clock more if you leave them unchecked. The icons are:

Low

Medium

High

Critical

Choose which disputes to resolve wisely!

Switchboard

  • Switchboard contains an outlet for each country
  • Connect two countries in dispute to make a call via the red or blue plug

Doomsday Clock

  • Clock counts how many "minutes" away from disaster the world is - there are 15 minutes total
  • If disputes are left unresolved, they reduce the number of minutes until midnight
  • Higher severity disputes will reduce the number of minutes more than others
  • The game ends when the clock strikes midnight
  • Occasionally, the minutes will count back up - this can slightly help you get your minutes back up if you're doing well in the game!

Thanks for playing!
